The BLACK Collaborative Inc. has reached an exciting new milestone by becoming an official practicum and DrPH field experience site for Walden University’s Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) programs. This partnership opens doors for graduate students to gain valuable hands-on experience in public health, particularly in areas focused on health equity and community engagement. It also strengthens the pipeline of future public health leaders dedicated to justice-centered practices.

Building the Next Generation of Public Health Leaders
This collaboration between The BLACK Collaborative Inc. and Walden University is more than a formal agreement. It represents a shared commitment to preparing students to address real-world public health challenges, especially those affecting Black mothers and infants. Students enrolled in Walden’s MPH and DrPH programs will now have the opportunity to work directly with The BLACK Collaborative’s initiatives, including The BLACK MOTHER Collective™ and the Center of EDEN™.
These programs focus on maternal and infant health equity, breastfeeding support, and community health promotion. By participating in practicum placements here, students will:
Gain practical experience in designing and implementing health equity programs
Contribute to community-driven projects that address disparities in maternal and infant health
Develop deliverables such as policy briefs, program evaluations, and health promotion strategies
Engage with community members to understand their needs and perspectives
This hands-on experience is crucial for students who want to make a meaningful impact in public health and build careers grounded in social justice.
What Students Can Expect from the Practicum Experience
Students joining The BLACK Collaborative Inc. as part of their practicum or field experience will find a supportive environment that encourages learning and growth. The practicum offers a chance to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting, working alongside experienced public health professionals and community leaders.
Some examples of practicum activities include:
Evaluating the effectiveness of breastfeeding equity programs and suggesting improvements
Assisting in the development of culturally relevant health promotion materials
Conducting community needs assessments to guide program planning
Supporting advocacy efforts aimed at improving maternal health policies
These experiences help students build skills in research, program management, community engagement, and policy analysis. They also foster a deeper understanding of the social determinants of health and the importance of culturally responsive public health practice.

The Importance of Community-Driven Public Health Work
The BLACK Collaborative Inc. has long emphasized community engagement as a foundation for effective public health interventions. By partnering with Walden University, the organization ensures that future public health leaders experience this approach firsthand.
Community-driven work means listening to the voices of those most affected by health disparities and involving them in the design and implementation of programs. This approach leads to more relevant, sustainable, and impactful outcomes.
For example, The BLACK MOTHER Collective™ works directly with Black mothers to address barriers to breastfeeding and maternal care. Students involved in this initiative learn how to build trust, communicate effectively, and develop programs that reflect the community’s needs and strengths.
A Partnership Rooted in Shared Values
This partnership also highlights the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and community organizations. Walden University’s recognition of The BLACK Collaborative Inc. as a practicum site reflects a commitment to health equity and justice-centered public health education.
Dr. Katye Miller and the Walden University team have played a key role in making this partnership possible. Their support acknowledges the impact of The BLACK Collaborative’s work and the potential for students to learn from this unique setting.
By working together, both organizations contribute to a stronger public health workforce equipped to tackle complex health challenges in diverse communities.
Opportunities for Mentorship and Community Engagement
The BLACK Collaborative Inc. invites students, faculty, and community members to get involved beyond the practicum experience. There are opportunities to:
Partner on research and advocacy projects
Mentor students interested in maternal and infant health equity
Support community education and outreach efforts
Staying connected with The BLACK Collaborative means joining a network dedicated to advancing health equity and justice. This ongoing engagement benefits students and the communities they serve.
Preparing Students for Sustainable Change
The practicum experience at The BLACK Collaborative Inc. prepares students not just to enter the public health field but to lead with purpose. By working in a setting focused on equity and community partnership, students develop the skills and mindset needed to create sustainable change.
This experience aligns with the growing demand for public health professionals who understand the complexities of health disparities and can design programs that address root causes.
Students who complete their practicum here will be well-positioned to contribute to maternal and infant health equity efforts nationwide.
The BLACK Collaborative Inc.’s new role as an official Walden University practicum and DrPH field experience site marks a significant step forward for public health education and community health. This partnership offers students a unique chance to learn, grow, and make a difference in the lives of Black mothers and infants.
