Black Maternal Health Week is a vital moment to recognize and address the challenges Black mothers face in the United States. From April 11 to 17, 2026, communities nationwide will come together to honor Black mothers, families, and the organizations working tirelessly to improve maternal health outcomes. This year’s theme, Rooted in Justice and Joy, highlights the importance of healing, equity, and collective care in building a healthier future for Black families. At The BLACK Collaborative Inc., Black Maternal Health Week is more than a week of awareness—it is a movement toward lasting change. This post explores the significance of this week, the events planned for 2026, and how you can join the effort to support Black maternal health.

Understanding the Urgency of Black Maternal Health
Black women in the United States face maternal health outcomes that are disproportionately worse than those of other racial groups. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Black women are approximately three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. These disparities stem from systemic racism, unequal access to healthcare, and social determinants such as food insecurity and economic instability. Addressing these issues requires a holistic approach that goes beyond medical care. It involves community support, access to nutritious food, mental health resources, and culturally competent care. Black Maternal Health Week shines a spotlight on these needs and mobilizes communities to take action.
Rooted in Justice and Joy: The 2026 Theme
The theme for Black Maternal Health Week 2026, Rooted in Justice and Joy, reflects a dual commitment:
Justice: Advocating for equitable healthcare policies, dismantling systemic barriers, and ensuring Black mothers receive the care and respect they deserve.
Joy: Celebrating Black motherhood, resilience, and the strength found in community and culture.
This theme encourages a balance between acknowledging the challenges and embracing the power of healing and happiness as part of the journey toward better maternal health.
Key Events to Participate In
The BLACK Collaborative Inc. is hosting two major events during Black Maternal Health Week 2026 that embody this theme and invite community involvement.

Food insecurity is a critical factor affecting maternal and family health. To address this, The BLACK Collaborative Inc. is partnering with the Urban Farming Collective to launch the BLACK CARE™ Food Access Initiative. This ongoing Food Hub will provide families with fresh, locally sourced produce and meals, along with access to maternal and family health resources.

How You Can Support Black Maternal Health Week
Supporting Black Maternal Health Week goes beyond attending events. Here are practical ways to get involved:
Register for events like the BLACK CARE™ Food Hub launch and the Pajamas, Pillows & Popcorn night to show up for the community.
Share information about Black maternal health disparities and resources on your social networks to raise awareness.
Volunteer with local organizations focused on maternal health, food access, or community wellness.
Advocate for policies that improve healthcare access and quality for Black mothers at the local and national levels.
Donate to organizations working to close the maternal health gap and provide direct support to families.
Every action contributes to building a future where Black mothers and families receive the care, respect, and joy they deserve.
The Importance of Community and Collective Care
Black Maternal Health Week emphasizes that healing and progress happen through community. Programs like the BLACK CARE™ Food Hub show how addressing social determinants such as food insecurity can improve health outcomes. Events that foster open conversations create safe spaces for sharing and learning. By coming together, communities can build networks of support that extend beyond healthcare facilities. This collective care approach nurtures resilience and empowers families to thrive.
